Air Rifle Calibre Choice

One of the oldest debates in airgunning is simple: which calibre should you choose – .177 or .22?

While other calibres exist, such as .20 or .25, in the world of sub-12 ft-lb air rifles, the choice almost always comes down to these two.

.177 Calibre: Speed and Precision

.177 pellets are smaller, lighter, and faster. The higher velocity gives them a much flatter trajectory, making range estimation significantly more forgiving for the shooter. Because the pellet reaches the target faster, it has a shorter "time of flight," which often makes it less susceptible to wind drift than its slower counterparts. While it may have less "knock-down" surface area, its high sectional density often allows for superior penetration.

.22 Calibre: Weight and Energy

.22, on the other hand, is larger, heavier, and slower. It usually travels around 150–200 fps slower than a .177 but can weigh nearly twice as much. This results in a harder-hitting pellet that carries more momentum and retains its kinetic energy better at longer distances. However, the trade-off is a much more pronounced, "loopy" trajectory, which requires the shooter to be much more precise with range estimation and hold-over.

Technical Nuances: Efficiency and Operation

Beyond the basic choice of size and weight, the debate often moves into the more technical realms of air efficiency and mechanical operation. In Pre-Charged Pneumatic (PCP) rifles, the .22 calibre is inherently more efficient with its use of air. Because the .22 pellet has a larger surface area (the "base" of the pellet), the pulse of air from the valve has more space to push against, meaning it requires less pressure to achieve the same 12 ft-lb muzzle energy than a .177. For the shooter, this translates to a higher shot count per fill, a vital factor if you are out in the field for a long session without a dive bottle or pump nearby.

A further nuance lies in terminal ballistics and the "kill zone" philosophy. The .22 is often praised for its "knockdown power," as its larger frontal area acts like a blunt instrument, transferring energy quickly into the target and creating a wider wound channel. However, at the sub-12 ft-lb limit, the .177 is often considered the "surgeon’s tool." Because it is smaller and faster, it offers better penetration on feathered game or through tough hide. Many modern hunters argue that since an air rifle relies on precise brain shots for humane dispatch, the flatter trajectory of the .177 makes that precision much easier to achieve consistently under field conditions.

Handling and Barrel Harmonics

Finally, one cannot overlook the physical handling and barrel harmonics. On a cold winter morning, fumbling with tiny 4.5mm (.177) pellets while wearing gloves can be a genuine frustration, making the larger .22 much easier to load into a breech or magazine. Furthermore, every barrel is a law unto itself; "pellet fussiness" can often dictate your choice for you. While .177 is the gold standard for target competitions like Field Target (FT), a .22 might vibrate less or "loop" more predictably in a specific rifle’s barrel.

Ultimately, there is no universally "best" calibre, only the one that aligns with your priorities. If you value the surgical precision of a flat trajectory for target work, the .177 is the clear winner. However, if you prefer the air efficiency and tactile "thump" of a heavier projectile for the field, the .22 remains a rugged favorite. For most airgunners, the debate isn't settled by ballistics charts alone; it’s settled the moment they spend time behind the trigger and discover which calibre simply feels right.
